USG gives 10 to 40 sq ft per lb for its unaggregated wall and ceiling spray texture, depending on the pattern: 500 to 2,000 sq ft per 50 lb bag. Light orange peel lands toward the high end, heavy knockdown toward the low end.

How far a bag of texture goes depends on the pattern: a fine orange peel spreads thin, a heavy knockdown puts down more material per square foot, and a popcorn ceiling is mostly aggregate. Manufacturers publish a range rather than a figure per pattern, so the calculator orders for the heavy end and shows the light end beside it: spray texture, powder 500 to 2,000 sq ft per 50 lb bag, spray texture, ready-mix 300 to 700 sq ft per 3.5 gal carton, popcorn ceiling 256 to 320 sq ft per 32 lb bag, popcorn patch, aerosol 4 sq ft per 1 pint can.

Texture types

  • Orange peel: a fine spray that dries like the skin of an orange. Common on walls, hides minor flaws.
  • Knockdown: heavier splatter flattened with a knife after it sets up, for a mottled look that hides more.
  • Spatter: like knockdown without the flattening.
  • Popcorn or acoustic: a thick aggregate texture for ceilings, now mostly used to patch existing ones.

Practice first

Texture is mostly technique: mix consistency, air pressure and distance all change the result. Spray a scrap of board first and match it to the existing finish before you start on the ceiling, and prime new drywall before texturing so the texture dries evenly.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the ceiling area by the coverage of the product. A 12 x 12 ceiling of 144 sq ft takes one 50 lb bag of powder texture for any pattern, or one 32 lb bag of popcorn texture.
